Hail risk is graded from the Canadian GEM model's thunderstorm energy (CAPE), storm codes and rain probability over roughly the next 12 hours, and raised automatically when an official Environment Canada warning mentions hail. It is a forecast, not an observation.

When is hail most likely in Calgary?

Calgary's hail season runs roughly from June to early September and peaks in July. Damaging hail almost always falls from thunderstorms that build over the foothills in the afternoon and drift east across the city between mid-afternoon and early evening, which is why a clear morning says little about the afternoon. Outside that season the risk here is usually “None” — but the table above always shows the model's current reading, not a seasonal guess. More in the Calgary hail season guide.

Which parts of Calgary get the most hail?

The northeast takes the worst of it more often than not — storms usually track east-northeast across the city, and Calgary's costliest recent hailstorms did their heaviest damage there. Airdrie, Chestermere and the east side of the city are downwind of the same storms. See Rundle weather, Airdrie weather and why the region is called Hailstorm Alley.

Watching a storm come in

When a storm is building, the Calgary weather radar shows where the heavy cores are and where they are heading, and the live map marks any area with a storm or hail signal in the next 30 minutes. Turn on alerts from the bell on the map to be notified when Environment Canada issues a warning for your area. Always follow official warnings for safety decisions.
