How this chinook forecast works

Environment Canada doesn't publish a chinook forecast as such, so this page reads its model forecast for the pattern a chinook leaves. It flags a chinook when, between October and April, the wind blows from the west or southwest (200–300°) at 20 km/h or more for at least 3 hours in a row, the temperature climbs at least 8°C above its low of the previous 12 hours, and the humidity drops by at least 15 percentage points. That combination — warm, dry, westerly — is what separates a chinook from an ordinary windy day. It is a model reading, so treat the timing as approximate, and weaker chinooks that stay above the city without mixing down to ground level may not show up.

What is a chinook?

A chinook is a warm, dry wind that comes down the eastern slopes of the Rockies after Pacific air has dropped its moisture crossing the mountains. It can lift Calgary's temperature by twenty degrees or more within a day in winter, melting snow that then refreezes into ice. The visible sign is the chinook arch: a long band of cloud over the western horizon with clear sky beneath it. The full explanation is in chinook winds in Calgary, explained.

Which parts of Calgary feel it first?

The west side and the foothills. Cochrane, Springbank and Signal Hill usually warm up before the east side of the city, and Forest Lawn is typically last. On the live map, a chinook shows up as the west-side temperatures running well ahead of the east.
